Neon was discovered in 1898 by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers.
The first neon lights were made by George Claude in 1911.
Neon signs were made popular in the early 1920's throughout France and the United States.
Neon gas naturally produces a red glow but over 150 other colors can be created with the use of other elements. Most commonly, Argon, Phosphor, Xenon, Helium and Mercury.
The first neon signs were made for the Packard Car Company in 1923 at a cost of $12,000 each.
While Neon gas produces a red glow, Argon gas creates a blue glow.
A indoor neon sign consumes, on average, the same as a 60 watt light bulb.
Neon signs can last upwards of 20 years or more if they are not broken.
Neon signs are safe as any other small electrical appliance.
